Ontario PCs Expanding Global Leadership in Clean, Reliable Nuclear Energy

As countries around the world look for affordable, reliable, and clean energy, Ontario is leading the way, exporting our made-in-Ontario nuclear expertise to power a cleaner future.

At the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris, the Ontario government announced that Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has signed a letter of intent with the Belgian Nuclear Forum to explore deploying Ontario’s small modular reactor (SMR) technology in Belgium. This new partnership follows Belgium’s decision to restart its nuclear generation program and reflects Ontario’s global reputation for building world-class nuclear projects on time and on budget.

Ontario’s growing international partnerships — including existing SMR agreements in Estonia and Poland, and CANDU refurbishment work in Romania — are opening new markets for our province’s nuclear supply chain, creating good-paying jobs here at home, and strengthening Ontario’s position as a global energy superpower.

Here at home, our government’s plan to rebuild and expand Ontario’s nuclear fleet will generate over $160 billion in GDP during construction and $630 billion during operations, supporting 80,000 construction jobs and 64,000 long-term operational jobs. The construction of four new SMRs at Darlington alone will add $38.5 billion to Canada’s GDP and support 3,700 highly skilled jobs while driving $500 million annually into Ontario’s economy.

Ontario’s nuclear expertise is powering our province, creating good jobs, and helping countries around the world move toward clean, reliable, affordable energy.
